Coast to Coast, Less to Landfill: Reducing Waste Efforts and TRUE-Certification at Smucker Facilities
January 8, 2026
As part of our commitment to cultivating a thriving planet, we've been working toward a zero-waste goal across our Company-owned manufacturing facilities. As of December 2025, 11 of our sites have achieved TRUE certification, with each one playing an important role in reducing waste and driving sustainability forward.
TRUE certification focuses on exploring every opportunity within economic, environmental, and social bounds to divert non-hazardous solid waste from the environment, meaning avoidance of incineration, waste-to-energy, and landfill. TRUE certified facilities adopt processes that consider the full lifecycle of products, making operations more resource-efficient and environmentally responsible.
Our first site was certified in 2019 and the second in 2021. Building on that momentum, four more facilities achieved certification in 2024, and an five in 2025. The success of these facilities has set an incredible foundation for our future efforts as we strive toward our stated goal of 100% of our Company-owned manufacturing sites achieving TRUE certification by 2030.
By implementing this program, our facilities have unlocked new opportunities for sustainable resource management and waste reduction. In 2024 alone, these efforts resulted in the better use of an additional 16 million pounds of materials, sent to more environmentally preferred processes such as composting and animal feed production.
To take our waste reduction efforts a step further, we partnered with Envita Solutions to assist with managing solid waste materials and identify new waste diversion opportunities. Together, we’ve found ways to keep items such as personal protective equipment, PVC products, pallets, and other production materials out of landfills and in more sustainable streams. Another key improvement has been the introduction of reusable totes to transport Uncrustables® sandwich fillings between facilities and bakeries. Reusing these totes in a cycle-type system reduces packaging waste and ensures product quality.
Additionally, our procurement platform now enables teams to source pre-approved, sustainable alternatives for common items, supporting zero-waste purchasing and reporting. And through ongoing training developed by our Smucker Sustainability Employee Resource Group (ERG), and Corporate Sustainability team, we’re ensuring every employee at our Company has the tools to contribute to these efforts.
Minimizing waste output is essential to improving environmental health and supporting a healthier planet for generations to come. We’re extremely proud of the teams working toward the ongoing goal of achieving TRUE certification. Their hard work and dedication to the planet continues to benefit not only our Company, but the communities where we live and work.
